Overlooking an amazing vista of the U.S. Capitol Building, Governor Kempthorne spoke about his respect for the institution of Congress and his fellow Senators on both sides of the aisle. He reflected on the history of the building, from its cornerstone being laid on September 18, 1793 to the completion of the dome during the Civil War. Governor Kempthorne recounted poignant and meaningful moments from his time as Senator. With highly entertaining impersonations of his fellow Senators, Governor Kempthorne shared the story of helping Majority Leader Dole pass the first Senate bill of the session and how he developed bipartisan friendships with Senators Byrd and Kennedy.

Governor Kempthorne also invited his wife, Patricia Kempthorne, to join him in making a few remarks as a Senator’s spouse. She spoke about being in awe of sitting in the Capitol as her husband was sworn-in and the freedom we all enjoy to visit the Capitol and walk across its grounds. Mrs. Kempthorne emphasized the importance of passing along the stories of history and service to her grandchildren and future generations.
The event brought to life the mission of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society which is to enhance the public’s respect and knowledge of the U.S. Capitol Building and Congress. The U.S. Capitol Historical Society thanks Governor Kempthorne and the American Council of Life Insurers for hosting and underwriting a portion of this event.

Governor Kempthorne began his commitment to public service in 1985, when he was elected Mayor of the City of Boise, Idaho. After serving seven years as Mayor, he was elected to the United States Senate in 1993. With Idaho issues close to his heart, he left the Senate after one term and was elected Governor of Idaho in 1998, and was easily re-elected for a second term in 2002. In 2006 Governor Kempthorne returned to Washington, D.C. to serve President George W. Bush as the 49th Secretary of the Interior. Governor Kempthorne was appointed president and CEO of the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) in November 2010.
