Why Support the Society?

Since 1962, the U.S. Capitol Historical Society has played a vital role in preserving the history of the Capitol, Congress, and the people who have shaped American democracy. Your support helps ensure that this history is documented, preserved, and shared with future generations.

Supporting the Society is an investment in preserving the heart of American democracy. By making a gift to the Society, you help fund programs and resources that educate people about the workings of Congress, the importance of civic engagement, and the democratic principles upon which our nation was founded. Your support helps promote civic education, ensuring that future generations understand the importance of active participation in democracy. Make the most of your gift

Leave a lasting legacy by including the U.S. Capitol Historical Society in your estate plans. Options include bequests, charitable gift annuities, and more.

Here are the civic education programs that will benefit directly from your generosity:

We the People Constitution Tour:

Each year, our "We the People" Constitution Tour™ takes more than 1,400 eighth-grade students from D.C. public and charter schools to significant historical sites in D.C. to learn about the first three articles of the U.S. Constitution. Feedback shows that this tour has a significant impact on students, encouraging them to participate in public service, vote, and understand their rights and responsibilities as American citizens.

The We the People Hub:

A digital collection of resources for teachers that offer a deeper understanding of civic rights and responsibilities. These foundational resources are crucial for understanding the Constitution and the structure of the American government, making them essential for any civics curriculum.

Teaching the Constitution Through Theater:

Discover original plays developed with StoryWorks Theater, focusing on pivotal moments and figures in American history. Each play is accompanied by a set of curriculum materials, including lesson plans, discussion questions, and activities, designed to integrate seamlessly into teaching.

Teacher Professional Development Workshops:

Our educator workshops provide free resources and new strategies for teaching civics. Each year, our organization participates in the Three Branches Institute virtual teacher workshop in collaboration with the White House Historical Association, the Supreme Court Historical Society, and the National Archives and Records Administration.

"Capitol Kids!" Webinar Series:

This series brings authors to middle school classrooms nationwide to discuss American history in a fun way and inspire democratic participation.

Why Your Support Matters

WE THE PEOPLE Constitution Program

At the U.S. Capitol Historical Society, one of our most successful and comprehensive educational efforts is dedicated to familiarizing our youngest Americans with the principles of Democracy and civic engagement. Each year, our We the People Constitution Tour™ takes more than 1,400 eighth-grade students from D.C. public and charter schools to significant historical sites in D.C. to learn about the first three articles of the U.S. Constitution.

We strongly believe that every student, regardless of their background, deserves the opportunity to learn about our nation’s history in a meaningful and engaging way. Your generosity can transform these initiatives into opportunities for thousands of students. Every donation, big or small, plays a crucial role in achieving our mission:

  • $25: Gives 50 students their own Constitutions.
  • $85: Funds the full experience of the Constitution Tour for one student.
  • $200: Provides lunch for 25 students on their educational journey.
