2013 Youth Forum Focuses on “Working Across the Aisle”

Students asked a wide range of questions.

More than 150 high school students from the District of Columbia and Virginia gathered in the Congressional Auditorium of the Capitol Visitor Center on April 11, 2013 for a day-long forum on the topic of “Working Across the Aisle.” The program featured current Senator Saxby Chambliss (GA); former members Beverly Byron (MD), Vic Fazio (CA), Speaker Dennis Hastert (IL),  and Connie Morella (MD); and congressional staffers Jen Becker, Brett Loper, Cisco Minthorn, Lara Pierpoint, and Clare Sierawaski.

The program was sponsored by Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP and Washington Gas. Scott McGeary of Washington Gas welcomed the students to the Capitol and talked about his experiences as a Congressional Page when he was a high school age student.

The participants discussed how Members of Congress and their staffs endeavor to work together with Members and staffs of the other party by keeping lines of communication open and seeking areas of agreement on which legislation can proceed. Students took the opportunity to ask questions that ranged from the panelists’ favorite sports teams to the current proposed gun control legislation.
