A New Logo for the Digital Age

The United States Capitol Historical Society

Members of the United States Capitol Historical Society have selected a new logo (below) that will go into use on Friday, September 6th, 2019.

In recent years, the Society grew its online presence which created the need for a more digital-friendly logo. The Society’s current logo (below) is based on a historic, panoramic photograph taken of the East Front of the Capitol around 1900. Although a beautiful image, its wide aspect-ratio has meant digital applications either crop off the House and Senate wings or shrink the image such that details and words are difficult to see.

We designed the new logo with digital rendering and video graphics in mind: clean and simplified, it can be easily enlarged or shrunk to fit a display area without losing its word-mark or details. One of two finalists, the Society’s members selected the design as their overwhelming favorite. Members made the difference!

While this change reflects the Society’s increased efforts to reach people through digital media, what has not changed and what will not change is the Society’s commitment to provide high-quality content and programming in service of our mission “to foster and increase an informed patriotism among the citizens in the study of this living memorial to the founders of this Nation and the continuing thread of principles as exemplified by their successors.”

The Society thanks its members for helping make this selection and for their ongoing support.
