Fiftieth Anniversary of the March on Washington

Recently, members of Congress of both parties commemorated the 1963 March on Washington during a ceremony in National Statuary Hall. The commemoration was held on July 31, 2013 because Congress would be in recess in August. Congressional leaders who spoke at the commemoration included Congressman John Lewis (D-GA), who as a leader of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, spoke at the 1963 rally. Lewis recalled the March on Washington as one of the nation’s finest hours and that it helped usher in a spirit of bipartisanship that moved the country forward.
